2009 was not my best. Far from it. I’m ready for a new year. Here’s to hope.

Dad and I spent some time tonight fixing my fly rod. We’ll see if it holds or if it snaps. Fort Wayne has been wonderful. Back to Seattle tomorrow, but not before a 4 hour layover in Cincinnati.

Regarding our mental health in this final push to finish our theses: And you know what doesn’t help? Seeing our friends lead normal lives. We all loathe you, Scott.

I’m in the middle of working on my final thesis for grad school, feeling fairly confident of my knowledge of the subject matter and my assertions thus far. Then tonight I come across a chapter in my primary text, of which I highly respect the author and his theologies, and then he goes and writes a lengthy section on how the jumps I want to make shouldn’t be made. My main theologian...

Here’s the thing about living alone: you get to eat all the cheese you want. Those cheese trays, the ones with small sections within the plate to separate the different kinds of cheese, should be called trays of shame. You’re at some sort of public function, maybe prom or a wedding reception, any place where everyone’s self-esteem is already slightly lower than normal, and...

Joshua & Matea
Shooting for Joshua & Matea was an honor. Congrats to you both. As an aside, I’m booking up my weekends this spring & summer to shoot a few weddings. If you’re interested, do email me (thelongbrake[at]gmail) or call me [2063990645] and we can discuss details. I have the availability to travel both nationally and internationally except for the last weekend in June. I’m...

Everyone who knew Anna Bond (then Anna Melcon) in college knew that, no matter what she did, she was going to make beautiful work. She had this studio loft in Lynchburg that we were all jealous of, the kind you see in movies. Exposed brick. Wooden beams supporting the high ceiling. Photographs hanging from a string in her bathroom, drying from being printed the night before. I remember walking...

Jake and I have begun our conversations like this almost every day for the last 3 years. He always asks for flowers. With subtlety. In December of 2006 I was living in Zulu, Indiana, working and saving to go to graduate school. During that time I was writing for an online magazine, and every once in awhile I’d get an email with comments or a response to something I had written. Most of...

Here are a few things I wrote down today at the SAM exhibit Michelangelo Public and Private: Drawings for the Sistine Chapel and Other Treasures from the Casa Buonarroti: • Michelangelo drew sketches of his food on grocery lists so his servants, who were often illiterate, could get a clear idea of what he wanted. • Michelangelo carved the 17’ tall David from a huge block of stone that...

Dad: Hey, how many pairs of those wicking socks did you want for Christmas? Me: Oh. I don’t know. Two? I know they’re pricey. Dad: Nanci (my step-mom) got you 4 pairs. I didn’t think you’d want that many. Me: Wow. That’d be great. I would definitely wear them. Dad: Well, SURPRISE, I guess. We are of the same blood, he and I. Thanks Dad & Nanci!
